Light evokes many fascinating thoughts, and holds endless interpretations. It is with light that we are able to see; light illuminates our world and allows life to exist. All of the artists in this exhibition are using light as the primary element in their pieces. They provide us with a new forum for discussion by allowing the audience to supply their own associations. With the diversity of light based work being created by artists like Heather Ackroyd, Dan Harvey, and Jim Campbell, we are presented with a seemingly infinite playing field of perception. There is a broad sense of how light can be used, and various subjects that light, as a medium, tackles.

Exhibitions at the college are free and open to the public. The Godine Family Gallery is located in the North Building, 621 Huntington Avenue, Boston.

Refract is an engaging exhibition that allows artists to share their work and ideas with their community. We know that everyone is busy so drop by the gallery any time and hang up work with fun tack or double sided tape between now and October 6! If your work requires other hardware or has other special needs (we are accepting all media) email us at godinegallery (at) masart (dot) edu. Through this project, work has been publicly displayed around Boston all summer. Art was taken out of the gallery environment and into a public setting in an effort to share ideas and skill. In order to continuing sharing, we will be giving the work away at the closing reception.

Attention Seniors!

We are inviting you to submit work for a show in the Godine Family Gallery of MassArt seniors. This show will be installed while orientation is occurring and for the first week of school. It will consist of artist from various departments who are entering their senior year at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. We hope to demonstrate the variety of work and styles that MassArt finesses and produces through the varied programs that are offered.

Submission deadline is August 1, 2011. Please include an artist's statement, written proposal and examples of your work (with titles, dimensions and materials). Send your submissions/questions to godinegallery@massart.edu.

AspectEZ: "Strangely Funny"

This week in the Godine Family Gallery Aspect will be hosting the first installment of AspectEZ, a new series of events and online projects that support for emerging artists. Aspect is a Biannual DVD publication for time-based artwork. This event, entitled "Strangely Funny" is a collection of various artist's time-based work, that will be up for the week in the gallery, as well as a screening of the DVD on Thursday, November 4th from 6-9pm.

Public Safety & Facilities Show Opening

Joseph “Puppy” Wright organized a fantastic show to highlight the artwork that various Public Safety officers and Facilities workers make in addition to working at the school. It was a variety of photo documentation of their works, paintings, sculpture, video, text, as well as two performances.

Doom, Gloom, Shit, and Piss

Max Bard is a Junior in the Painting department. He is currently exploring the ideas of creating an environment and alternate personas. This show was a start in that exploration that he will continue to explore. There was collaborative aspect within the show between himself and his studio-mate, Ryan Faherty. His work has a street-art and “fuck culture” aesthetic as a reaction to the current place he finds himself in modern society. He even incorporated projections, sound, and viewer involvement in the opening, Friday, October 15.

It was a really fun show, and we were glad to open the space up to Max and Ryan. More images can be found on our Godine Gallery Flicker

MassArt's Official Poetry Slam

Lewis Morris will be hosted his first open Mic Night of the school year in the Godine Family Gallery Thursday, October 7th. There was an assortment of musicians, comedians, and poets who were able to share their works, as well as poetry slam, and a guest performer Jared Paul. It was an incredible night filled with talent and an enthusiastic audience.

Doom, Gloom, Shit, and Piss is a show we will be hosting in the Godine Family Gallery October 12th - 15th. The opening will be that Friday at 7pm.

Doom, Gloom, Shit, and Piss will be a body of work that Max Bard, a Junior in the Painting department, has been working on recently. It will be a collection of his painting, drawing, and collage work as well as some possible 3D pieces. His work has a street-art and “fuck culture” aesthetic as a reaction to the current place he finds himself in modern society. Definitely something not to miss!

"Phish: a Lookback, works by Tre Anistachio" is a drawing installation by Harlan Simmons that is currently up in the Godine Family Gallery. It will be up from August 15 - 28th, and included an interactive opening where visitors were encouraged by Harlan Simmons to draw on the walls alongside his own drawings and prints.

Every year the Godine Family Gallery switches management from one group of MassArt's SIM department students to another. this year the position has been filled by the dynamic duo, Heather Armstrong (left) and Kimberly O'Toole(right).

We, as gallery managers, hope simply to archive well executed shows that fit the artist's vision. Exhibiting art in the gallery space is a learning experience for both us as managers, and the rest of the student art community. The Godine Family Gallery is the only student-run gallery in MassArt, making it an unique opportunity for everyone who wishes to be involved.

Although MassArt students are always encouraged to exhibit their work, the Godine Gallery isn't exclusively for students. Anyone can apply for a show. Typically, shows run between four and seven days (exceptions will be reviewed by managers), not including the set up and take down days. If you wish to fill out a Godine Gallery Submission Form please e-mail: godinegallery@massart.edu.

Jenna Mack: The Young Raising The Young

Jenna Mack is a recent graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art & Design. She works primarily in Documentary style photography. Last year Jenna received the prestigious Godine & Dondis Travel Grant which supports artists in projects related to travel and location.

In the series The Young Raising The Young , Mack explores the issue of teen pregnancy, which in 2009 was rated highest in Mississippi where this series is set. The selection which is on display from this series are sixteen prints comprised of both silver gelatin and digital color prints. Her treatment of this project is both honest and expressive towards a clear concern for the young people effected by early pregnancy which she encountered in her project.

The portraits of these young mothers and fathers holding their children instill diverse topics of this pressing social issue. Images of poverty hang along side those of financial stability proving that this is an issue which knows no boundary of class. Photographs of Gulfport, Hattiesburg, and Indianola depict landscapes of a harsh, populated area with an under toning message of abandonment, death and social concern for this recent rise in teen pregnancies. This series tells the story of a social landscape which is struggling with this issue along with its effects, as well as a generation of young parents who are forced to grow up too fast.

Ryan Tebo

"Is everybody else alright?" is a new installation by Mass Art Visiting Asst. Prof. Ryan Tebo, which explores the possible instances of empathetic shifts in conscience experienced by Robert F. Kennedy throughout the 1960’s. In 1953 RFK was appointed as Senator Joseph McCarthy's assistant counsel to the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations and supported McCarthy’s horrifically unethical red-baiting during that period. From the moment RFK became Attorney General under his brother’s presidency, however, he seemed to gradually go through a transformation and by the time of his candidacy for president in 1968, had seemingly become a compassionate champion of the poor and of civil and human rights throughout the US and the world. The installation uses archival material, 12-channel slide projection, and video performance to ask the question, “Can genuine moments of empathy and connection with other people profoundly affect our conscience and directly influence our political positioning?”

Visiting Artist, Visiting Critics

On Saturday,March 7th, students from 826 Boston visited the Godine to see 6 MPH/NO WAKE, a show of paintings by Massachusetts artist Chris Reid. The students, all between the ages of 9 and 12, spent time viewing the work and discussing visual concepts like line, color, shape, and space in the context of Reid's work. One student even cited that the show served as inspiration to her, as she recognized similarities between Reid's series of aerial coastal views and her own mapping project. The reviews below were written on-site by the students.

My first impression was splattered expressions of colors of paint. The artist didn’t just use one color he used many vibrant colors but not so much as muted. Both vibrant and muted colors motioned downward. Lines also lead the eyes with the stroke of the paint brush. The artist feels like his life or feelings are falling positively.

It made me joyful and happy. It is colorful. I would describe the work by saying that it looks like a curvy stream with flowers. I recognized the flowers.

I would recommend this gallery to a friend because I liked it and it was fun. You would come see pictures and express how you like a picture.

This picture is different to others is that it’s peaceful and nice to look at. It reminds us of peace because the colors are calm and make me very happy.

I would tell people about this because it is really helpful to people of how they need to make their art presentable because some artwork has trees, water, and words. Because it’s inspirational to help you think about your art work.

Cori Spencer premieres her performance Cotton Wood for the first time outside of the major’s studio. A junior in SIM, Cori’s work explores the nature of race and power in America, with a focus on the struggle between personal identity and social perceptions, ranging in media from performance to painting, video and installation.

Toilet Phone is SIM student Ami Mills and New England Conservatory graduate Lauren Strobel. The two employ a variety of instruments and stylistic influences in a single performance, all under an umbrella of manic, playful energy. By appropriating various conventions of popular song and reinterpreting them with almost sinister crudeness, Toilet Phone sheds light on the inadequacies and failings of the emotional vernacular of popular culture. Their standout song, “Do you want a donut?” incorporates drums, modulated vocals, a casio keyboard, bass guitar, beatboxing, and of course, of two boxes powdered donuts lobbed at the audience.
